Yet More on Small Business Reputation Management

At this rate I’ll be forced to update my list of great small business reputation management posts every week!  After highlighting Will Scott’s post yesterday, today I’d like to point to a terrific article I found via Matt McGee’s Small Business SEM: search engine guru John Battelle running down the need for his local hardware store to start engaging its community.

Speaking of Matt McGee…

Did you know he’s now taking on clients again?  Small business owners of the world, I cannot imagine a better person to advise you on your search engine strategy.  Hire this man.  And if you can’t afford his hourly rate, Matt’s just come out with a terrific SEO e-Book: How to SEO Your Site in 60 Minutes.

…Continuing to Speak About Matt McGee…

Matt is absolutely prolific these days!  He’s also started a new blog recently which you may not have seen — HyperLocal Blogger.  I found another great piece of content through this post — a series featuring the top hyperlocal blogs in specific US metros from Outside.in.

New Topic: Mike Blumenthal

Mike has been kind enough to post his presentation from the recently-completed SMX East where he reviewed the Google Maps patent in great detail.  Check it out for a less-frequently-discussed topic called Location Prominence, which merits further study.  I’ll try to post my own thoughts on Mike’s presentation later this month.

Mike also asks if anyone is paying attention to the dramatic dependence on the Maps / Local algorithm that many of Google’s properties are starting to incorporate.

DexKnows Dives Headfirst into the YellowPages Sleaze Pool

Chris Silver Smith of Natural Search Blog highlights a sadly manipulative tactic from DexKnows in an effort to increase its PageRank.  Memo to Dex (and its SEO agency): When you’re competing with PR 7’s, 8’s, and 9’s for most of your traffic, I’m not sure this kind of tactic should really be the cornerstone of your strategy for higher rankings site-wide.  Instead, consider something infinitely more useful, and scalable, like launching University yellowpages as Chris did at Superpages.com.

And Finally…

My latest Search Engine Land piece came out yesterday: Looking Back at “The Summer of Local.” I do my best to wrap up the major stories from Local Search over the past several months.  Give it a read–I’d love to know your thoughts over on Sphinn!
